You approved five vendors. Somehow, you ended up with fifteen.
That’s the quiet horror of modern marketing. Privacy teams approve vendors, sign agreements, and establish controls. But what happens when consumer data moves beyond those approved relationships?
In advertising, one vendor calls another, partners exchange information, and data can travel through multiple companies in milliseconds. What happens downstream often remains a black box.
No tricks, just three true privacy horror stories - with a little disguise to protect the innocent.
The Opt-Out That Wouldn’t Stay Dead
An automaker discovered that most of its trackers kept running even after visitors opted out. An advertising data company was still receiving device identifiers from those visitors, too.
The privacy team could see what was being shared and when. What it couldn’t confirm was whether the recipient could use those identifiers for its own advertising. The opt-out was supposed to close the door, but the data kept slipping through.
The Ghost of Integrations Past
A health and wellness brand discovered that a data partner was sharing information downstream. even when people hadn’t consented to that sharing.
The trail led back to two integrations approved years earlier: one for audience data and another for identifiers. They’d stayed in place as advertising technology and privacy requirements evolved, but nobody had gone back to review how they worked, what information they passed along, or whether consent choices were being honored.
What had once been approved had quietly become a blind spot. The integrations were still there, still doing their jobs, while the assumptions behind their approval had gone unchecked.
The lesson? Older integrations deserve a fresh look. Revisit what they collect, where the data goes, and how consent carries through each handoff.
Sometimes the scariest things are the ones you’ve forgotten are there.
The Chain With No End
A connected TV platform shared viewer IP addresses and device IDs with roughly 20 to 30 advertising partners. Those partners had partners of their own, and five different ad-insertion services made the web even more tangled.
The platform could notify its immediate partners when viewers opted out. But it couldn’t reliably track downstream vendors, verify deletion requests, or ensure those preferences traveled through every handoff.
Sending the request was one thing. Every handoff added another partner, and another place for an opt-out to disappear.
Demystifying the Black Box, One Trick at a Time
The scariest part isn’t that these privacy teams failed to approve their vendors, it’s that they followed their processes and still couldn’t see what happened next.
Privacy teams are accountable for data flows they don’t always control - and vendor assurances aren’t the same as evidence. If a regulator asked what happened to a consumer’s data after an opt-out, how far could you follow the trail?
Every good ghost story has an unknown. Your data shouldn’t.
I’d love to hear your privacy horror stories. And if you’re attending the CPO Forum in Miami next month, bring them to our candid working session on what’s actually breaking inside modern privacy programs.
